Nearly everyone raises prices later than they meant to, and then raises them by more than they wanted to, which is the version that upsets people.
Give the date before you give the number
Tell existing clients the new rate and the date it starts, in that order, at least a month ahead. The month is not a courtesy — it is what turns the change from something happening to them into something they can plan around.
Do not explain your costs
Your rent going up is not the client’s problem and saying so invites a negotiation about your rent. The price is the price of the work. One sentence is enough.
What tends to happen
A few clients leave, usually the ones who were already slow to pay. The rest say yes and do not mention it again. If nobody leaves at all, the increase was probably too small.
