Every room needs a different kind of plant.

The four rooms we get asked about most, with the plants we usually suggest for each.

Room for one big plant

The living room is usually the brightest room, but the sun comes through curtains. One plant over a metre tall in the corner does more than five small pots scattered around.

Fiddle leaf fig, turn the pot monthly so the crown grows evenly
Swiss cheese vine, fine 3 metres from a window
ZZ plant, good for the dim corner by the TV unit

Plants that cope with low light and little water

Bedroom curtains often stay shut all day, and it is the room where you most easily forget to water. Pick a plant that survives both.

Snake plant, watering every two weeks is enough
ZZ plant, thick leaves that store water well
Avoid humidity lovers, air conditioning dries leaf edges

Compact, handles the heat

Kitchens are humid and swing in temperature. A tabletop plant kept a metre or more from the stove will be fine.

Bird’s nest fern, it likes the humidity from cooking
Peacock plant, happy by a kitchen window
Do not put it next to the gas stove, leaf edges burn fast

Lots of sun, lots of wind, dries fast

A balcony is the only spot in a townhouse with real sun. In return the soil dries twice as fast and wind tips pots over.

Succulents and plants that want direct sun
Heavy or concrete pots so nothing tips over
In the rainy season, raise pots so they drain

How we choose our plants

A plant that looks good outdoors will not necessarily survive indoors.

Plants come in from nurseries in Sa Dec and Cu Chi, then spend six weeks in a greenhouse where the light is stepped down. Anything that drops more than half its leaves never reaches the shelf.

Six weeks sit between these two photos.

On the left, a plant fresh from the nursery: big leaves, but thin ones, grown under direct sun. On the right, the same plant after a slow step-down in light: thicker leaves that will not drop when it moves into your home.

Drag the slider to compare. This is also why our plants cost about 8 percent more than nursery prices.

It arrived without dropping a single leaf, the root ball still firm in the pot. The driver even told me where to put it.

I asked on Zalo at nine at night and someone answered, with a real answer rather than a canned one.

The pot is nicer in person than in the photos. One star off because my colour was out of stock and I waited an extra week.

A plant that died in the first month really was replaced, no long questioning. Of course I bought again.
